The sister-in-law of South Korean player Hwang Ui-jo was sentenced this Thursday (14) to three years in prison for publishing explicit videos of the football player online and trying to blackmail him.

She, who was not identified by authorities, was accused of sharing the videos on social media, posing as an ex-girlfriend who accused him of infidelity.

The publication of the videos triggered a police investigation into the Nottingham Forest striker to clarify whether the sexual encounters were recorded without consent.

Hwang has denied the allegations, but the Public Prosecutor’s Office must still decide whether to charge him or close the case.

In its ruling, the Seoul court argues that the sister-in-law released the videos “knowing that they would be released indiscriminately”, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

“The content was widely distributed inside and outside South Korea (…) The nature of the crime is very serious,” said the court, which considered Hwang’s recognition of the crime and request for clemency as mitigating factors.

The 31-year-old, currently on loan at Turkish club Alanyaspor, has 19 goals in 62 games for the national team.

The last one was in November in a World Cup qualifying game against Singapore.

The South Korean federation suspended him from the national team pending the conclusions of the investigation into alleged illegal recording, which caused him to miss the recent Asian Cup in Qatar.
