The Brazilian handball team debuts this Thursday (13) in the men’s Pre-Olympic, the last competition that distributes places in the sport in Paris 2024. From 5 pm (Brasília time), the team faces Slovenia, in Granollers, in the Catalonia region (Spain). Afterwards, they will face Bahrain, on Friday (15), and against hosts Spain, third place in the 2023 World Cup, on Sunday (17).

The handball Pre-Olympic brings together 12 teams divided into three groups, which compete in different locations in Europe. The top two in each bracket get their passport stamped for Paris. Group 2 (Germany, Croatia, Austria and Algeria) will compete in the tournament in Hannover (Germany), and group 3 (Portugal, Norway and Tunisia) in Tatabanya (Hungary).

Less than two months ago, the team led by Marcus Tatá won the South-Central American Tournament, in Buenos Aires (Argentina), which brought together Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay and Costa Rica, in addition to Argentina. The achievement earned a place in the 2025 World Cup, in Norway, Croatia and Denmark.

Brazil’s Pre-Olympic matches will be played at the Palau d’Esports de Granollers, an arena with a capacity for 6,500 fans, which was the venue for the handball finals at the Barcelona Olympics (1992).

The team is fighting to record its third consecutive participation in the Olympics, and the seventh in history. To compete in the last edition (Tokyo 2020), the country won the place by finishing second in the Pre-Olympic quadrangular, behind only Norway. The key also included South Korea and Chile.

The women’s handball team is already guaranteed in Paris. The Brazilians sealed their place with the seventh championship at the Pan de Santiago (Chile), last year.
