There is no race in which Rebeca has never won medals at World Championships

Gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Antwerp (Belgium), this Sunday (8), and completed her collection of medals at the World Gymnastics Championships. As a result, there is no event in which she has never won medals at the World Championships, proving herself to be a complete gymnast.

This puts her in a hall that has only 10 other gymnasts since the World Cup was created in 1952. There are five Soviets, two Romanians, two Russians, and Simone Biles. Only the American, Brazilian and Russian Aliya Mustafina have achieved this feat this century.

The Brazilian had already won medals in the asymmetrical (2021), vault (2021), floor exercise (2022) and individual all-around (2022), and this year she also reached the team podium, winning silver with Brazil. Furthermore, also in Antwerp, she won silver in the individual all-around and gold in vault. Rebeca is still competing in the solo final, soon, as a strong candidate for the podium.

The bronze on beam was surprising, because the Brazilian’s score in the final was well above what she had achieved in three other performances on this device at the World Cup. Her best score was the one that earned her eighth place in the qualifiers: 13.800. In the individual all-around final she scored 13.500 and, in teams, 13.166. In the final, she had a visible imbalance, but scored 14.300.

Simones Biles, who had already won in teams and in the individual all-around, won her first gold medal on apparatus. The North American scored 14.800, followed closely by China’s Yaqin Zhou, who received 14.700.

Rebeca was the last to perform and needed at least 14.100 to reach the podium, overtaking the Dutch Sanne Wavers, who was in third place. Wavers was only 11th in the qualifiers, but managed to get a place in the final due to other athletes withdrawing.

With the bronze, Rebeca is the Brazilian who has won the most medals at the World Gymnastics Championships, with eight podiums. Until the start of the competition in Antwerp, the position was held by Diego Hypolito, with five victories. Furthermore, this is the first time that Brazil has reached the podium on the balance beam.

Until then, the best results in the country had been sixth places with Flávia Saraiva, in 2019, and with Rebeca herself, in 2021. There was the expectation that Flavinha would be responsible for breaking this taboo. She made two performances at around 14.0 at the World Championships, but didn’t do well in the qualifiers and ended up out of the final.
