Shortly after the referee whistled the end of the match against Italy that guaranteed Brazil’s presence in the men’s volleyball dispute at the Paris Games in 2024, the national team coach, Renan Dal Zotto, announced his resignation.

He stated that he needed to recover from health problems. “At this moment, I will be absent from the Brazilian team, not from volleyball”, stated Dal Zotto in an interview with SporTV after the match with the Italian team in the pre-Olympics. Read here about Brazil’s classification for the Games.

The now former national team coach referred to the health problems he faced during the pandemic — he was hospitalized for 36 days due to complications related to Covid-19 in 2021 — and stated that he needed to take a break. “I need to reestablish myself, physically, mentally”, said Dal Zotto in the interview.

The former national team player had been in his position since the beginning of 2017 and had been under pressure due to the team’s latest results, such as the defeat to Argentina in the South American final and to Poland in the quarter-finals of the Nations League.

The name of former national team coach Bernardinho was mentioned on social media as one of the favorites by fans to take command of the team for the Paris Games.

Two-time Olympic champion with the men’s team, Bernardinho was announced at the beginning of September as the team’s technical coordinator. According to the CBV (Brazilian Volleyball Confederation), he arrived to plan work for the 2024, 2028 and 2032 Games.

Bernardinho combines the role of national team coordinator with that of coach of the Sesc Flamengo women’s volleyball team, which he has held since mid-2020.
