WELL-BEING

The aim of the project is to teach elderly people to ride a bicycle for free

Manaus (AM) – Manaus City Hall, through a partnership signed between the Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (Semseg) and the Manaus Sport Foundation (FME), launched, this Wednesday morning (8), the project “Pedalando com the Best Age”, which aims to teach elderly people how to ride a bike, free of charge.

The project launch ceremony took place at 8:30 am, in the amphitheater of the Lagoa do Japiim municipal park, in the South zone, where the Semseg administrative building is located. Initially, the project’s target audience is elderly people, but depending on the need, it may also include individuals from different age groups.

At first, ten Caloi bicycles, 29, will be used in classes, which should take place twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, inside the “Lagoa do Japiim” park, managed by the Municipal Department of Environment and Sustainability (Semmas).

The bicycles, belonging to Semseg, have aluminum front suspension, 24-speed transmission and hydraulic disc brakes, which provide greater pedaling precision. According to the head of Semseg, Sérgio Fontes, the instruction team is made up of physical education teachers with experience in cycling, provided by FME, and municipal guards trained in the Cycle Guard course.

“Our mission, determined by Mayor David Almeida, is to transform this park into one of the best public spaces you can visit in Manaus. This new project, especially aimed at the older population, those people who did not have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike when they were young, will allow people, even at their prime, to practice sports and have a quality of life”,

argued Fontes.

The head of Semseg highlighted that the partnership with the CEO of FME, Alexandre Maciel, has yielded good results. Fontes recalls that, in September this year, the foundation delivered, completely revitalized, the park’s martial arts arena, which has been used by employees of the secretariat and visitors to Lagoa do Japiim to practice aerobic exercises and Jiu-Jitsu.

“We are creating coexistence spaces for people around the park and other parts of the city to enjoy. We are very happy to provide this type of service to society. In addition to safety, we are providing well-being and quality of life for park goers,”

pointed out the Semseg secretary.

Resident of the Japiim neighborhood, housewife Edileuza Peres, 63, celebrated the initiative

“I have been going to the park for about three years and have been following the positive changes in the place. In addition to dance classes, I usually participate in excursions that senior groups organize. I never learned to ride a bike and I was excited about the idea of being able to have that experience at this age. Congratulations to everyone involved,”

concluded.
