Carlos Alcaraz’s poor results in South America caused Novak Djokovic to increase his gap at the top of the ATP rankings, while the Spaniard sees his second position threatened by Jannik Sinner (3rd).

Alcaraz, who fell in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (defeat to Alexander Zverev), defended many points by adding the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires and the Rio Open (ATP 500).

In Argentina, where he was champion in 2023, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals; in Rio, where he was a finalist a year ago, he abandoned the tournament after suffering an ankle injury on his debut.

As a result, Alcaraz lost 300 points in the rankings and his advantage over Sinner, champion of the Australian Open and ATP 500 in Rotterdam this year, fell to 535 points.

Thiago Wild, who remains the best Brazilian in the ranking, gained nine positions and is now number 73 in the world, after reaching the quarterfinals of the Rio Open.

The champion of the Rio tournament, the most important in South America, was Argentine Sebastián Báez (21st), who also climbed nine steps on the list, but failed to enter the Top 20.
