Athletico is about to close the striker’s loan Matheus Babi for Peñarol, from Uruguay. The player is expected in Montevideo this Thursday (15) to sign a contract. The information is from the newspaper El País.

According to the Uruguayan press, the hiring of Babi was a request from coach Diego Aguirre. Peñarol also consulted David Terans and Augustín Canobbio, former players from the Aurinegra team, to obtain references for Babi.

After loans to Santa Clara, from Portugal, and Goiás, the striker returned to Furacão at the beginning of this season and even gained minutes with coach Juan Carlos Osorio, in the match against Cianorte.

In 2021, Athletico spent R$12 million to sign Matheus Babi from Botafogo. At the time, he was the most expensive signing in the club’s history. However, in two seasons, he ended up not establishing himself.

In total, Matheus Babi played 33 matches with the red and black shirt, scoring just four goals.
