Tournament brought together 37 great players from the states of Amazonas, Roraima, Alagoas and São Paulo

Manaus (AM) – Amazonian Eduardo Barbosa Mesquita was the grand champion of the First Memorial Blitz Alexandre Gonçalves 2024. The competition was named after Alexandre to honor the Portuguese chess player who pioneered the sport in the State. The tournament, which took place on Tuesday (13), brought together 37 great players from the states of Amazonas, Roraima, Alagoas and São Paulo in the Chess Room of the Amazon Chess Federation (FAX), in the Adrianópolis neighborhood, Central-South Zone of capital.

The dispute followed the Swiss system in 13 rounds and was valid for the rating (score that measures the player’s strength) from the Brazilian Chess Confederation (CBX) and The International Chess Federation (FIDE). Second place was taken by another athlete from Amazonas, Andrey Neves. Third place went to Victor Gabriel, who is from Amazonas, but currently plays for the state of Roraima. The tournament guaranteed cash prizes for the first three places.

According to FAX Technical Director, Alan Nascimento Teixeira, the tournament had a good number of participants and this contributed greatly to the technical level.

“It was a very strong tournament, in blitz mode, where each player had 3 minutes and 2 seconds per move made to play the entire match. We have the participation of great chess athletes, including a Fide Master, a Master candidate, eight National Masters and a Female National Master. In addition to the masters, we had the participation of the Brazilian champions of the Brazilian School Games, the National Master Suan Lira and Williams Teles. MN Suan Lira also won the Brazilian championship in the 14 years old category and represented Brazil at the World Cup, which was held in Italy”,

said Alan Teixeira, who was the referee for the competition.

Since the founding of FAX, Amazonas has had 15 absolute champions. Five of them participated in the First Memorial Blitz Alexandre Gonçalves 2024.

Next sport meeting

According to the national master and president of FAX, Rudson Peixoto, this was the first event on the FAX calendar, which this year was announced well in advance so that chess players can prepare for the tournaments scheduled in 2024. The next meeting has already been scheduled to take place on February 24th and 25th. The Amazonense Children’s Festival 2024 (FAMAC) will be held in the Federation room at the STD 30 + 30 rhythm and counts as the Amazonense championship for the Under-8, Under-10 and Under-12 categories.

“We will have unprecedented events in the region, such as the Brazilian Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship here in Manaus, an event that is being held for the first time in the North Region. In October, we will have the Manaus Chess Open, which is reaching its 3rd edition, consolidating the North’s participation in the chess scene in Brazil, Latin America and the world”,

highlighted Rudson Peixoto.
