Do you know Pelé Street, in the capital of São Paulo?

Less than a week after the death of the King (1940-2022), Rio de Janeiro City Hall was already renaming Avenida Radial Oeste to Avenida Rei Pelé. And the road is very close to Maracanã, which made the tribute special.

But what about in the capital of São Paulo? Where is Rua do Rei? Well, if it exists, this scribe didn’t find it (nor did his Google Maps guy). It’s curious, and a little sad, that there isn’t a street here named after the greatest player of all time, who would have turned 83 next Monday (23).

A dear friend, a Corinthians fan, even made the ideal suggestion. He once told me: “Have you ever thought about renaming Av. Pacaembu as Av. Pelé? Ending in front of Charles Miller Square [considerado o pai do futebol]where the Football Museum and Pacaembu stadium are located [pelo menos uma parte]?”. It would be perfect. The path would connect the king to the creator.

Pelé scored 71 goals at Maracanã, where he was honored; but he scored 127 at Pacaembu, where he didn’t go. The stadium located in the noble neighborhood of São Paulo is only behind Vila Belmiro among those that have seen the most goals from the man.

There are other cities, including in the interior of São Paulo, with streets honoring the King. In Três Corações (MG), where he was born, there is a museum and statue. But São Paulo, the capital, is in debt.
