A Spanish prosecutor said on Tuesday (5) that he requested four-year prison sentences for hate crimes for four football fans after a black doll dressed as Real Madrid striker Vinicius Júnior was hung by its neck. on a bridge in January.

A banner reading “Madrid hates Real” and an inflatable doll with a replica of Vinicius’ number 20 shirt appeared hanging from a bridge near the club’s training ground before a match against rivals Atlético de Madrid on 26 December. January.

The prosecutor accused four members of the radical far-right group Frente Atlético, who are fans of Atlético de Madrid, of making threats against Vinicius Júnior and also of infringing fundamental rights, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

The four showed “an unmistakable sign of contempt and repudiation of the color of the victim’s skin and an attempt to undermine her peace of mind,” he said.

The prosecutor also requested joint compensation of 6 thousand euros (around R$32 thousand) for civil liability for the moral damage caused to the football player.

The four men, who refused to testify when they were arrested in May, were released on bail after a court banned them from approaching Vinecius or communicating with him. They were also prevented from entering Real’s stadium and training ground, as well as Atlético’s stadium.

Vinicius Júnior was in the spotlight in Spain earlier this year after calling LALIGA and the country itself racist, following verbal aggression from fans he suffered during another Real Madrid game in Valencia in May.

The game was interrupted for 10 minutes when the Brazilian striker drew attention to the fans who were shouting insults at him. He was then involved in an argument with some Valencia players, which led to him being sent off in the second half.

Since then, the sporting world has shown solidarity with the 23-year-old player and the Brazilian government has demanded severe sanctions against those responsible for the racial insults.

In October, Vinicius testified as a witness in a judicial investigation against three fans for allegedly making racist gestures against him during the match in Valencia. He was also called to give evidence in a similar case regarding insults at Mallorca’s stadium in February.
