Tarcísio defends reversal of Ibirapuera’s listing – 02/16/2024 – Sports

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), defended this Friday (16) the reversal of the listing of the Ibirapuera sports complex with the aim of modernizing the space for sports competitions.

“In my personal view, there is no reason for us to be stuck with an architecture that is already obsolete. We can create an arena with the scale, size, and scope that São Paulo deserves, much more modern, to accommodate competitions”, he said, during event to hand over homes in the south zone of São Paulo.

Iphan (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage) provisionally listed the space in 2021, during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) administration, in a defeat for the then governor João Doria (PSDB). The former governor, Bolsonaro’s rival, wanted to grant the space to the private sector, which was made difficult by the listing.

The issue returned to the spotlight after the removal of the rubber flooring from the Ícaro de Castro Mello stadium, in Ibirapuera. The holding of a motorsport event that was scheduled to take place at the beginning of March at the stadium was not communicated to Iphan.

Criticism from the athletics community due to the misuse of the space caused the government to go back and terminate the stadium’s lease contract.

Tarcísio highlighted that the objective is for the site to continue serving as a sports space and will not have any other purpose, such as, for example, real estate exploration. For him, reversing the listing would enable the existence of a “more modern sports complex on par with the largest complexes in the world”.

He also defined the recovery of the complex, which he said was in a “critical situation”, as priority number one for his government’s Sports department. In the case of reversing the listing, a public-private partnership is being considered to bring in more investments.

If the listing is not reversed, the government also intends to carry out renovations, respecting the characteristics of the site.
