Brazilian Filipe Toledo won, this Friday (16), the El Salvador stage of the Surfing World Cup. Current world champion, he overcame severe back pain and the North American Griffin Colapinto, who continues at the top of the ranking, but now with a minimal advantage.

Second in the season’s standings, the 28-year-old from São Paulo faced the discomfort and prevailed in the decision in Punta Roca. After a stage –in Lemoore, in the United States– with general complaints from Brazilian athletes against the judges, he left no room for doubt.

Toledo got two excellent grades (out of grade 8), one with three aggressive maneuvers, the other with a variety of styles. The total of 17.33 (9 + 8.33) was well above the 12.1 (7.17 + 4.93) of Colapinto, who had won the final in El Salvador the previous year against Filipe himself.

“I was super-concentrated on what I needed to do. Yesterday, I woke up with a strange back, I had to rest in the afternoon. Today, it was even worse. I couldn’t even walk, I felt like an old man. But, with the team I have, it was possible compete,” he said.

“It’s all up here,” he added, pointing to his head. “It was too painful to walk and to paddle. To surf properly, not so much. But, of course, I wasn’t 100%. I had to fight and I was super blessed.”

Filipe reached 41,660 points in the season, against 42,890 for Colapinto. The Brazilian João Chianca (36,320), the Australian Ethan Ewing (32,215) and the Brazilian Gabriel Medina (28,025) complete the classification zone for the decisive stage.

In the women’s dispute, who got the best in El Salvador was the North American Caroline Marks. Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, who withdrew from the tournament in the quarterfinals with food poisoning, rose to fifth place.

The championship is now going to its eighth stop, in Saquarema, Brazil. There are only three stages left for the definition of the five surfers and the five surfers who will fight for the world title, in September, in San Clemente, in the United States.
