The president of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice), José Perdiz, determined this Friday (23) that Sport’s next games in national competitions be held without the presence of fans, in cases where the club is the host of the match. When playing as a visitor, the Recife club will be without the amount of tickets to which it would be entitled.

The decision complies with an injunction requested by the organization’s Attorney’s Office and comes after the Fortaleza team’s bus was attacked with stones and explosive devices by Sport fans after the two teams faced each other at Arena Pernambuco, in the Copa do Nordeste. The match on Wednesday (21) ended in a 1-1 draw.

Goalkeeper João Ricardo, defenders Titi and Dudu and midfielder Lucas Sasha, as well as Argentine defenders Gonzalo Escobar and Emanuel Brítez, were injured by fragments of broken glass and required medical attention.

“This criminal act demonstrated the lack of security, and the non-compliance by Sport Club Recife (Clube Mandante) with basic principles of Brazilian Sport”, says Perdiz in the decision published by the STJD. “Sport Club Recife should ensure the safety and integrity of everyone involved, especially during the journey to and from the sports venue.”

The punishment for Sport will remain in effect until the trial in the first instance of a future complaint to be offered by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The attack was condemned by most Brazilian clubs, who at the same time showed solidarity with Fortaleza, runner-up in the 2023 Copa Sudamericana, a tournament that it will compete in again this year.

“Sport Club de Recife strongly repudiates the acts of violence committed against the Fortaleza delegation bus”, wrote the traditional northeastern team, which currently competes in the Second Division, in a message on the X network.

Fortaleza, led by Argentine Juan Pablo Vojvod, leads Group B of the Copa do Nordeste with seven points, while Sport is second in Group A, with the same score.
