Thiago Carpini has not yet completed a month at the helm of São Paulo, but he has already achieved two achievements that were previously unheard of at the club. On Tuesday (30), he celebrated a victory over Corinthians at the Itaquera stadium. On Sunday (4), he won a national title with a victory over a state rival.

The Morumbi team defeated Palmeiras on penalties, 4-2, after a 0-0 draw, at Mineirão, in Belo Horizonte, and won the Brazilian Super Cup. The confrontation between the winner of the Copa do Brasil and the Brazilian Championship ended in a triumph for the former.

The score made Carpini, 39, the youngest coach to lift a trophy at São Paulo since Muricy Ramalho – six months younger than Thiago is today – led the 1994 Copa Conmebol triumph.

Announced on the 11th, the coach was the solution found by the board on the eve of the start of the season, when Dorival Júnior left the team to take command of the Brazilian team. He arrived under some suspicion, due to his still limited experience, but prestigious for the work he carried out in 2023, leading the small Água Santa to runner-up in São Paulo and Juventude to second place in the Brazilian Series B.

Now, Carpini, a former player who built most of his career as a defender and midfielder in clubs in the interior of São Paulo, is a champion coach. Something he achieved in his fifth match as head of the Morumbi team.

The duel was held in Belo Horizonte due to the ban on classics with two fans in São Paulo, as per guidance from the state Public Prosecutor’s Office, in a highly contested security measure. The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) ended up defining Mineirão as the venue for the tournament in a single game.

Palmeiras and São Paulo, then, shared a stadium for the first time since 2016. And they saw a balanced, truncated clash. There were scoring opportunities, but neither team established real dominance.

In the first half, Rony and Mayke had dangerous shots, well saved by Rafael. On the other side, Weverton did well with Nikão’s deflected shot. And he smiled when Wellington Rato, who would have been free to finish in front of him, failed to dominate.

The script was similar in the final stage. Flaco López and Mayke came to dangerous conclusions. On the other side, in a wrong way for Alviverde, Calleri had the chance in front of the goal and stopped at the rival archer. But the zero was not left on the scoreboard, and the title was decided in a penalty shootout.

The four São Paulo players who took the penalty found the net – Calleri, Galoppo, Pablo Maia and Michel Araújo. Murilo and Piquerez stopped after Rafael’s defenses in the left corner.

It was the first proper final of a national tournament played between Palmeiras and São Paulo. The rivals had already faced each other for the title of the 1973 Brazilian Championship, but the confrontation was valid for the last round of the decisive quadrangular, held in 1974. On that occasion, the 0 to 0 benefited the alviverde team, and the tricolor formation was left with the runner-up.

This time, the Morumbi team got the better of it, which has an advantage over its rival in terms of decision-making. The previous three were in the Campeonato Paulista. Winners in 1992 and 2021, the red, black and white team were defeated in 2022.
