Brazilians Filipe Toledo, two-time world surfing champion, and Rayssa Leal, who has accumulated titles in skateboarding, are among those nominated for the Laureus award for best action sports athlete of the year. The title will be awarded on April 22nd in Madrid, Spain.

In the Best Male Athlete of the Year category, competing are tennis player Novak Djokovic (Serbia), pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis (Sweden), football player Erling Haaland (Norway), runner Noah Lyles (USA), pilot Max Verstappen (Netherlands), as well as Lionel Messi (Argentina).

Among the women competing are football player Aitana Bonmatí (Spain), runners Shericka Jackson (Jamaica), Faith Kipyegon (Kenya) and Sha’Carri Richardson (USA), alpine ski athlete Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and tennis player Iga Świątek (Poland).

In 2023, Toledo won his second consecutive world title. He recently announced that he is taking a year off for a “mental break.”

Rayssa, last year, aged 15, won her first gold at the World Street Skateboarding Championships in Sharjah. She also won her second X Games gold in Chiba, Japan in the street competition. Her year ended with two great moments: a street gold medal in the sport’s first participation in the Pan-American Games, in October, and, a week later, she won the STU Open, in Rio de Janeiro.
