Next Tuesday (29), a group of Luso-Brazilian businessmen, enthusiasts of the history of Brazil, will begin a journey that should have taken place last year, when the 200 years of the country’s independence were celebrated, but which for various reasons ended up becoming a landmark that will end the celebrations on the eve of its 201st anniversary.
The Portuguese Heroes of Brazil project, developed since 2012 by the Federation of Portuguese Chambers of Commerce in Brazil, will leave Belo Horizonte to revisit the steps of Dom Pedro I that preceded Independence. The group will pass through 24 cities in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with the end of the journey scheduled for September 6th in the exact place of the cry that would confirm the departure of the Portuguese crown.
The “200 Years – The Roads to Independence of Brazil” expedition will be the third edition of the project. In the first two, carried out by the patron and creator of the endeavor, Antonio Bacelar Carrelhas, in 2015, they addressed the story of Pedro Teixeira, who demarcated most of the Amazon today belonging to Brazilian territory, and, in 2017, that of Martim Soares Moreno , a key figure in preventing the French and Dutch from dominating the northeast of the country.
Each expedition includes the distribution of a book to public elementary school students in the cities where the group passes, addressing the theme in didactic language and, in some selected centers, a theatrical intervention reproducing the highlights of the story told.
“It’s really cool to see the kids getting involved and participating in the presentations, interacting and getting to know a little more about our history”, says Vittorio Lanari Júnior, spokesperson for the project.
The purpose of the expedition, explain the organizers, in addition to recognizing the Brazilian territory, is to integrate Lusitanian and Brazilian knowledge, highlighting the Portuguese who played an important role in the history of Brazil and who are not always recognized in historiography.
The journey will be carried out mainly in a van that will leave Belo Horizonte, in the opposite direction to what D. Pedro did when he left Rio de Janeiro to try to quell a rebellion, passing through Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, São João Del Rei, Barbacena, Petrópolis , Rio de Janeiro and finally São Paulo. On the way, there will be visits to historic farms where the future emperor stayed with his entourage on the then difficult route, as well as walks along stretches such as Calçada do Lorena, in Caminhos do Mar park, in São Paulo.
Throughout the expedition, an audiovisual record will also be made, with the history of the paths taken, showing the interaction with the community of each location, educational lectures, and distribution of textbooks.
