After failing to leave Colombia at dawn on Thursday (24th), due to a technical problem on President Leila Pereira’s plane, the delegation of palm trees is expected to arrive in Brazil for the late afternoon of this Friday (25).
Players and other Palmeiras employees board a chartered flight, in Cali, around 11 am (from Brasilia). Leila’s aircraft, in turn, remains in Colombia for maintenance.
Palmeiras beat Deportivo Pereira 4-0, on Wednesday (23), in the first round of the Libertadores quarterfinals, in the Colombian city of Pereira. When it was time to return to São Paulo, the security system of the model E190-E2 plane, bought this year by Leila to facilitate and make the club’s logistics easier and cheaper, detected a technical problem, which prevented the return.
Faced with the unforeseen, the people of Palmeira had to travel a distance of more than 200 kilometers by bus to go from Pereira to Cali, where the board managed to get a chartered flight to the capital of São Paulo.
The situation compromised the preparation of coach Abel Ferreira for the duel with Basque, scheduled for 6:30 pm on Sunday (27) and valid for the 21st round of the Brazilian Championship. As the re-presentation was postponed and there was only one day left to train, the Portuguese coach could spare players against Vasco da Gama.
The trip to face Deportivo Pereira was the first international of the aircraft with Palmeiras. Purchased in Portugal, the plane made even longer flights to reach Brazil without problems and had also been used on other occasions in Europe. Before the Libertadores game, the São Paulo team’s delegation had already flown to Rio, where they faced Fluminense.
The plane belongs to Placar Linhas Aéreas, Leila’s company in the aviation business, and the idea is to make it available to other clubs for charter. The initiative aims to generate savings for the club, which, according to the Estadão, spends around BRL 1.5 million per month on travel for the squad.
