In the private duel between the Red Bull cars, Sergio Pérez took advantage of the problems faced by his teammate, Max Verstappen, and won the Saudi Arabian GP this Sunday (19).
The Mexican started on pole, even having his position stolen by Fernando Alonso, from Aston Martin, but it didn’t take long to regain the lead and open up an advantage to have a quiet race and win the second stage of the year.
Verstappen had a difficult weekend, but he was still in second place. On Saturday (18), in qualifying training, the two-time champion suffered a failure in his car’s transmission shaft and had to withdraw from Q2. Thus, he started in 15th position and made a recovery race.
With Red Bull’s cars performing far superior to rivals, he didn’t have much difficulty climbing the grid and seeking the top positions.
In the final part of the race, there was only one fight between Pérez and Verstappen because the Dutchman had another problem with his car, this time unidentified, and could not demand the maximum of his vehicle to fight for the victory.
Spaniard Fernando Alonso, from Aston Martin, completed the podium in third. It was the 100th time in the career of the two-time champion that he has reached the top three. In the season opener, in Bahrain, he had already been third.
The next stage of the F1 World Championship will be on April 2nd, with the Australian GP, at the Albert Park circuit.
