Brazilian Lucas Paquetá is being investigated for three yellow cards received in West Ham games, including one in the first round of the current Premier League season. Family members of the player would have bet on these games. The information is from the English newspaper “Daily Mail”.

Paquetá was punished with a yellow card in the 49th minute of the second half in West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, on August 12th. According to the “Daily Mail”, the card received in the opening round of the Premier League shed even more light on the athlete, who had already been investigated by the English Federation (FA) for five months.

Also according to the English newspaper, the FA was alerted by anti-corruption authorities about the attitude considered suspicious of the player. Minutes before, in stoppage time, the Brazilian had committed a foul that could have been punished with a card. The yellow received soon after was for complaint.

In addition to the card in the first round of the 2023/2024 Premier League, Lucas Paquetá is being investigated for a yellow card received in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, on March 11, for a foul on John McGinn, and for another in a new infringement, this time against Crysencio Summerville, in the Hammers’ 3-1 victory over Leeds on 21 May.

According to the “Daily Mail”, despite the fact that the investigation into the Brazilian has lasted five months, Paquetá was not aware that he was under the spotlight of the FA for suspicious behavior.

Paquetá has yet to testify about the situation. At first, the Brazilian offered to explain what happened to the authorities, but West Ham requested a delay of up to three weeks to “better understand” the basis of the investigation.

Paquetá withdrawn from the Brazilian national team

The interim coach of the Brazilian national team, Fernando Diniz, admitted that he dismissed Paquetá due to the investigation. The 25-year-old midfielder would be on the list released last Friday (18) for the commitments against Bolivia and Peru, on September 8 and 12, for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

“Paquetá was on the list. He’s a player I like a lot. It’s also not a matter of pre-judgment at all. On the contrary. It’s a question of preservation and letting Paquetá solve these issues that go beyond football”, said the coach.

Diniz said he hopes to be able to count on the player. The commander clarified that the doors of the CBF are open “as soon as these issues are positively resolved”.

“Both for Paquetá and for the national team, making him more comfortable is the most appropriate thing. We had these problems here in Brazil and we know that time is needed for things to clear up. It was really good of you to ask me because you are a player that I love. Despite not having worked together, I have the best impressions of Paquetá. The CBF is open to him as soon as he manages to positively resolve these issues that appeared at the last minute”, he concluded.

Transfer to Manchester City

The investigation against Paquetá caused Manchester City to suspend the hiring of the Brazilian, in a deal that would revolve around 80 million pounds (R$ 505 million).

Officially, the two teams keep the negotiation paralyzed, but the English press says that City will hardly return to the table for the Brazilian. Paquetá had been a request from coach Pep Guardiola to reinforce the midfield of the current Champions League champions.
