Even before debuting at the Grand Prix in Budapest (Hungary) on Sunday (10), the Brazilian Nathalie Moellhausen has already secured the country’s first place in fencing at the Paris Games, through the Olympic ranking. This Friday (8), Nathalie benefited from the poor performance of two direct competitors – the Canadian Ruien Xiao and Argentina Isabel Di Tella – which did not go well after their debut at the Budapest GP, the penultimate competition before the rankings were closed.

The Brazilian, world sword champion in 2019 and number eight in the world, is currently the best athlete in the Americas and occupies fifth place in the overall Olympic classification (118 points). Nathalie secured an early spot in Paris 2024 because she can no longer be reached by her opponents in the Olympic rankings. Ruien Xiao, second in the Americas, said goodbye to the Budapest GP in the preliminary phase, maintaining her 75.5 points. Nathalie’s other direct competitor in the Olympic race, Argentine Di Tella, also fell out of the main table and remains with 58 points in the classification.

With her place in Paris already secured, 38-year-old Nathalie is about to compete in her third Olympics in her career – the previous ones were Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Nathalie’s last title was at the Grand Prix (Qatar), in January 2023.
