Man is detained after attempting to steal cell phone from Lugano – 09/25/2023 – Sport

A 32-year-old man was arrested by the Military Police on Sunday afternoon (24), on the outskirts of the Morumbi stadium, moments before the Brazilian Cup final, accused of stealing cell phones from fans who were heading to the venue and also guests, among them former player Diego Lugano.

Videos circulating on social media show the moment in which the suspect takes advantage of a crowd around the Uruguayan to approach him and steal the former athlete’s cell phone.

Upon noticing the suspect’s action, Lugano himself managed to stop him and asked the police to go to the location. Until the military arrived, the theft suspect ended up being attacked by fans and fell to the ground.

In a statement, the SSP (Public Security Secretariat) reported that, as soon as the police were called, they arrived at the scene and found the suspect being attacked.

The man was taken inside the stadium and then taken to the 33rd DP, in Pirituba, where the case was registered.

“One of the victims, a 42-year-old former São Paulo player, reported that the man, after taking his cell phone, handed it to another person. The case was registered as theft in the 33rd DP”, informed the SSP.

Despite the incident, Lugano remained at Morumbi and followed the match in which São Paulo became champions of the Copa do Brasil, in a 1-1 draw with Flamengo — in the first game, the São Paulo team had won at Maracanã by 1 to 0.
