Lima will host the 2027 Pan American Games, as announced this Tuesday (12) by the organization, around two months after Barranquilla was withdrawn as host.
The Peruvian capital was competing against Asunción to host the 2027 games. This Tuesday, the two cities were able to present their candidacies at an Extraordinary General Assembly of Panam Sports, in which 40 countries participated.
On January 2, Panam Sports — which brings together the national Olympic committees of American countries — decided to remove the headquarters of the event that will be held in 2027 from the Colombian city of Barranquilla. At the time, the organization said that the unanimous decision of the Committee Executive was due “to the numerous violations of the current contract”.
The decision triggered a political storm in Colombia, where local and national authorities began a legal discussion to establish who was to blame for the withdrawal of the Pan American Games host city status.
Two weeks later, without mentioning the loss of the Pan headquarters, the then Colombian Minister of Sports, Astrid Bibiana Rodríguez Cortés, resigned from his position.
