The judoka Larissa Pimenta won five consecutive victories until winning gold for Brazil in the 52 kilo category, the country’s first medal at the Austrian Grand Prix, in the city of Linz, which began this Friday (8). In the final fight, the São Paulo native from São Vicente was champion by delivering an ippon against the Swiss Binta Ndiaye. The Austrian Grand Prix counts points towards the qualifying ranking for the Paris Olympics, which will close in July.
Before the gold match, Larissa triumphed in her debut against the Italian Martina Castagnola in punishments (3-0), advancing to the round of 16. Then, it surpassed the Hungarian Roza Gyertas with a waza-ari in the golden score (extra time) at five minutes. In the quarterfinals, the Brazilian got the better of the Portuguese Maria Siderot, when applying the strangulation technique. Afterwards, Larissa achieved another victory, this time over the Rio de Janeiro native Jessica Pereira, in punishments (3 to 2), guaranteeing classification to the final.
After the defeat to Larissa, Jéssica competed for the 52 kg bronze against the Dutch Naomi Van Krevel. The carioca, born in Morro do Dendê, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, applied an ippon to Van Krevel, but the referee disqualified the Brazilian, after reviewing the move, due to an irregularity: Jéssica rested her head on the mat during the projection for the blow and received a hansouku-make (disqualification).
The new arbitration rule that eliminated Jéssica is part of a set of changes published by the International Judo Federation (IJF) on December 30, 2021, to be in force during the competition period for the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle.
More Brazilians on the mat
This Saturday (9), seven other Brazilians will debut in the Austrian Grand Prix: Daniel Cargnin (-73kg), Vinícius Ardina (-73kg). Ketleyn Quadros (-63kg), Nauana Silva (-63kg), Guilherme Schmidt (-81kg), Ellen Froner (-70kg) and Luana Carvalho (-70kg).
Olympic race for place in Paris
The totaling of points in the (IJF) ranking began in July 2022 and only ends in June this year. The sport will bring together 372 athletes in Paris (equally divided between men and women).
The top 17 in the rankings in each category secure a place in Paris 2024 (with a limit of one judoka per country). From 18th place in the ranking, vacancies will be distributed by continent: Americas (21 vacancies), Africa (24), Europe (25), Asia (20) and Oceania (10).
