Corinthians has a meeting with SBT

The president of Corinthians, Augusto Melo, was at SBT headquarters this week for a meeting with the broadcaster’s executives. At the meeting, the top hat wanted to know the willingness of Sílvio Santos’ channel to purchase the broadcasting rights for the Brazilian Championship in the cycle from 2025 to 2029.

The executives were receptive to the idea, but the meeting did not move towards an official proposal, as the channel’s representatives understand that it is not the ideal time for an offer.

When contacted by the report, the broadcaster confirms Augusto Melo’s meeting with the president of Grupo Sílvio Santos, José Roberto Maciel, but states that the meeting was to discuss the sponsorship link between Tele Sena and the club. The current agreement between the parties is valid until June this year. Corinthians, in turn, did not respond to the report’s questions until the publication of this text.

Recently, the black and white club left the group of teams that form Libra after failing to reach an agreement on the division of the money raised from the sale of the rights to the matches. Corinthians demanded to receive the same amount as Flamengo, although the Rio team has a larger audience nationally.

This Friday (8), Libra and TV Globo announced an agreement for the rights to Nacional. The contract term runs from 2025 to 2029, including the right to broadcast across all of the group’s media, with an expected value of R$1.2 billion per year, totaling R$6 billion for five seasons. Globo will pay around R$600 million at the time of signing, as an advance payment.

Of this amount, Flamengo must pocket at least R$275 million, but the total may vary, as the calculation also takes into account the team’s performance in the competition.

The total value is 11% below the initially forecast, which was R$1.3 billion, precisely due to Corinthians leaving the negotiation.

Corinthians’ claim is that the team tends to have more audiences in São Paulo than Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Behind the scenes, this consideration is seen as a half-truth, especially in recent years.

Over the last few months, the main Brazilian football clubs from series A and B of the Brazilian Championship have come together into two large groups – the Liga Forte União, the result of the merger between the groups LFF (Liga Forte Futebol) and Grupo União, and the Libra- to negotiate broadcasting rights for its matches from 2025 onwards.

Botafogo, Fluminense, Vasco, Cruzeiro and Internacional are among the clubs competing in the first division that are part of the Liga Forte União. These clubs are trying to bring Corinthians to the block as they understand that the presence of the São Paulo club can increase everyone’s gains with the sale of TV rights.

Furthermore, these clubs also intend to share the TV rights for the Brazilian Championship with more than one company, such as an open TV station, another closed TV station and a streaming platform, as is currently the case with the Campeonato Paulista. This way, they understand that they can raise more.

The teams from Série A Atlético-MG, Bahia, Flamengo, Grêmio, Palmeiras, Red Bull Bragantino, Santos, Vitória and São Paulo, as well as nine from Série B, are part of Libra.
