Surfer from Rio Grande do Norte Ítalo Ferreira, 29, took advantage of the rare astronomical phenomenon of the annular solar eclipse this Saturday (14), which forms a kind of “ring of fire” in the sky, to pay tribute to the Olympic gold won at the Tokyo 2020 Games .

Ferreira, who became the first Olympic surfing champion, posed for a photo on a beach between the cities of Natal and Baía Formosa, in Rio Grande do Norte.

“Being living this moment is surreal and very symbolic, mainly because it represents one of the Olympic arcs and reminds me how special the Olympics were for me,” said the 2019 world champion surfer.

An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is at the furthest point in its orbit from Earth. Therefore, its apparent diameter is smaller than that of the Sun, allowing the appearance of the ring.

The entire national territory was able to partially observe the eclipse. But the ring of fire only in the North and Northeast regions. The only capitals on the path to annulment were Natal (RN) and João Pessoa (PB).

The last time this event could be observed from Brazil, on November 3, 1994, the surfer was just six months old. The phenomenon will only become visible again in the country on February 6, 2027.

Ítalo Ferreira suffered a sprain in his right knee during a stage of the world surfing circuit in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, in July. The surfer still has a chance to qualify for the Paris Games in 2024 during the ISA Games 2024 tournament, which will be played between February 22nd and March 2nd, in Puerto Rico.
