Striker Gabigol, from Flamengo, was punished with a two-year suspension by the Anti-Doping Sports Court (TJD-AD). The score of the trial, concluded this Monday (25), was five votes to four for Gabigol’s suspension, which starts on April 8 last year, and runs until April 2025. The player can still appeal of the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In an official note, Flamengo said that it “received the aforementioned decision with surprise and that it will assist the athlete in presenting an appeal to CAS, as it understands that there was no type of fraud, not even an attempt, to justify the punishment applied.” .

Gabigol was denounced by the Anti-Doping Sports Prosecutor’s Office on December 21, almost eight months after carrying out anti-doping tests at Flamengo’s Training Center (CT). Gabigol would have violated code 122 of the Brazilian Anti-Doping Code, which deals with “fraud or attempted fraud of any part of the control process”, and which provides for a maximum penalty of four years of suspension.

In the complaint signed by prosecutor João Guilherme Guimarães Gonçalves, Flamengo’s number 10, according to the officials responsible for the collection on April 8, would have made it difficult to carry out the exam. The player would not have rested for a minimum of two hours after physical activity in order to carry out the exam, and he also tried to hide his genitals when collecting urine, which takes place in the presence of the responsible official.
