“It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family. We ask that you may mourn in silence and refrain from asking any questions.”

Beckenbauer was one of the greatest players in German history. He was world champion as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990. He also made history at Bayern Munich, a club he defended for 13 years, between 1964 and 1977.

The idol had lost his 42-year-old son in 2015 and had been out of the media for a few years. According to the German newspaper Bild, in recent years, the former player suffered a heart attack, underwent heart surgery and Parkinson’s disease with associated dementia.

Beckenbauer’s career

Beckenbauer is one of German football’s greatest idols. As a player, he was European Championship champion in 1972 and World Cup champion in 1974. He is one of Bayern Munich’s greatest idols.

With the German club, he won three consecutive editions of the Champions League (between 1973 and 1976), in addition to four Bundesliga titles during his 13 years with the team. As an athlete, he also played for Hamburg, the club where he won another German Championship. He also played for the New York Cosmos, when he was Pelé’s teammate.

The German retired as a player in 1977. In 1984, he took over the West German national team and remained until 1990, when he was again World Cup champion, but as a coach.

After leaving the German national team, he coached Olympique de Marseille, in France, for a year, between 1990 and 1991. In 1993, he took over Bayern Munich until 1996. Since then, he has not done any more coaching work.

Only three people in history have won the World Cup as a player and as a coach: Zagallo, Franz Beckenbauer and Didier Deschamps. After last weekend, only the Frenchman remains alive on this list.
