The Fortaleza delegation’s bus was attacked as it left the Arena de Pernambuco, in the metropolitan region of Recife, in the early hours of this Thursday (22). The team from Ceará drew 1-1 with Sport, in the fourth round of the group stage of the Copa do Nordeste.
The CEO of Fortaleza’s SAF, Marcelo Paz, released a video on social media after the incident, with players bleeding. In a live broadcast, striker Yago Pikachu reported that five athletes were being taken to the hospital, including goalkeeper João Ricardo, full-backs Gonzalo Escobar and Dudu and midfielder Lucas Sasha. There is no information yet on the severity of the injuries.
In Paz’s video, one of the delegation members says that what was thrown at the bus was not a stone, but a homemade bomb. Club representatives will register a police report and the injured must undergo a medical examination.
Paz also published a video with player Gonzalo Escobar in the hospital. “One of the rocks caught his head. How will this look? Is it just another “isolated case”? There’s shrapnel in his body. What are the authorities going to do?”he complained.
Sport and Fortaleza had not faced each other for almost two years, since the 2022 Nordestão final, won by Leão do Pici. There is a strong rivalry between the teams from Pernambuco and those from Ceará, with a history of clashes between fans.
