Debutant Vegetti scores, Vasco defeats Grêmio at home and ends fasts in the Brasileirão

Newly signed, Argentine striker Pablo Vegetti arrived promising to help Vasco get out of the drop zone and started very well. He scored the winning goal over Grêmio, 1-0, in São Januário, Rio, for the 18th round of the Brazilian Championship, this Sunday. The result ends with two fasts. Vasco da Gama hadn’t scored a goal in their stadium since Carioca and still ended a series of four consecutive defeats.

This was the fourth victory of the Carioca team, which reached 12 points, still within the relegation zone. Grêmio, on the other hand, wasted the chance to return to second place and even to remain in the G-4. He had 30 points (in 17 games) and was overtaken by Fluminense.

In a deep crisis, Vasco found it difficult at first to even touch the ball. To make matters worse, Grêmio made an appointment from the attacking field and complicated life for Vasco. With shorter touches, it was the team from Rio Grande do Sul that gave a little more work.

With no crowd for punishment due to incidents, it was easy to hear the coaches and Ramón Díaz’s main complaint was the lack of speed in the touches and the lack of short passes. The Vasco team started to improve after the penalty kick after 25 minutes, but without giving the Gremista goalkeeper any trouble. Vasco’s best chance came only at 42, but on account of Gabriel Grando, who missed the goal after a cross in the area.

Grêmio, on the other hand, counted on Luís Suárez to move well and create chances, mainly in half-moon kicks. At 12 o’clock, the Uruguayan striker hit the first shot from the area’s entrance to the left corner and Léo Jardim stretched to defend. At 39 minutes, defensive midfielder Medel made the ‘best defense’ of the first half when, with his head, he avoided the goal with a shot by Nathan just outside the area.

At halftime, Díaz made it clear: agility in the passes. The scolding had a quick effect and, at 3 minutes, Gabriel Pec entered the area, shot, but was stopped by João Pedro and the ball went to a corner.

Unable to create anything in the attack, coach Renato Gaúcho took out two players after 15 minutes: Ferreira and Nathan gave way to Gustavinho and Besozzi, who made his debut for the team. On the Basque side, Díaz also made two changes. He took out Orellano, who moved the most offensively, and Sebastián Ferreira. Enter Erick Marcus and Vegetti, who was presented on Saturday as a new reinforcement.

The changes made the game busier and still Vasco continued better with Vegetti bothering the Gremista defense. The Argentine striker, by the way, had two good chances. The first, after a beautiful move by Zé Gabriel down the middle, he kicked across, but stopped in the hands of goalkeeper Gabriel Grando. The second, Pec crossed from the back of the small area and Vegetti headed between two defenders and scored, at 35 minutes.

With the goal, Vasco retreated and Grêmio pressed. At 47 minutes, the team from Rio Grande do Sul had its best chance, when Gustavinho, free in the small area, kicked it out. At 50 minutes, Léo Jardim made a beautiful save in a cross kick by Suárez, guaranteeing the victory.

Grêmio takes the field again next Sunday, against Fluminense, in Porto Alegre. Vasco returns to the field on the 14th as a visitor against Red Bull Bragantino.
