Chapada dos Veadeiros: a new trail is born – 07/06/2023 – É Logo Ali

Walk 500 kilometers of trails in Chapada dos Veadeiros in just over two weeks. This is the challenge posed by three experienced hikers, Mateus Matos, Guilhermy Maso and Márcio Nascimento, who at the moment this text goes up on the site will be starting a pilot expedition through a region most frequently visited by tourists in 4×4 vehicles. Around the trio, the Caminho dos Veadeiros, the newest addition to the Brazilian Network of Long Course Trails, should be consolidated and delimited.
“The Caminho dos Veadeiros already exists as an idea for about five years or more, it was implemented by some people who believed and joined the project”, Matos told the blog in the midst of the last preparations to start the walk. “The objective is to have fun, of course, but also to get to know the cerrado even more, and to produce a report, as is done in exploratory expeditions, which will be a strategic tool in defining the steps to be taken in the stretches, optimizing efforts where necessary” , he added.
Leaving Formosa and going to Cavalcante, both municipalities in Goiás, the route will connect trails, roads, back roads and small communities that follow the relief of the Serra Geral do Paranã, with all the diversity of the cerrado, a biome that broke deforestation records in recent years. years, with a loss of 110 million hectares, almost half of its total area, according to official data from Prodes Cerrado, a satellite monitoring program by INPE (National Institute for Space Research).
Of course, it is worth remembering that the trails in Chapada dos Veadeiros are not exactly new — what is new, in this case, will be its delimitation as a leisure trail. From traditional peoples to bandeirantes in the 18th century, from the Cruls mission (which in 1892 received the task of demarcating the area for a future Federal District, led by the Belgian engineer Louis Ferdinand Cruls) to the Prestes column (political-military movement organized by the communist leader Luís Carlos Prestes, who toured the country between 1925 and 1927), many have already faced the perrengues of the cerrado.
In addition to the names in the textbooks, smaller routes that are in the path of the current route that the group is following were included in whole or in part, such as the Central Brazil, 320 kilometers long, which connects the Federal District to São Jorge, in the municipality of Goiás. of Alto Paraíso, consolidated in 2016 by the Bahian mountaineer Orlandinho Barros, who covered it in 18 days.
The complete route that is delimited, however, will not be made available to the public immediately. According to environmental analyst Samuel Schwaida, who participates in the logistical support of the project based on his extensive knowledge of the region, the definitive route still depends on the verification in loco that this expedition makes, as well as the authorization of the passage of owners of areas crossed by the route. .
“The Caminho dos Veadeiros will represent one of the most important axes connecting the landscapes of the Brazilian cerrado, and will have the mission of connecting people to nature and local culture”, says Schwaida. He adds that the project is “intrinsically linked to the objectives of the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve by the MAB program – Man and Biosphere of Unesco, of the United Nations”.
Simply put, the idea is to open an option that takes more people to the region in order to consolidate “a great ecological corridor between the Federal District and Chapada dos Veadeiros, protecting landscapes, species and ecosystem services”.
As is often the case with long-distance trails around the world, the 500 kilometers of the Caminho dos Veadeiros will not be a shopping trip. “It is a challenge that demands physical and mental preparation, previous experience, knowledge of equipment and techniques and adequate planning”, explains Schwaida, who participated with the other three, in the last five years, in the identification “both of the most scenic and natural routes, as well as the places to stay overnight, water replenishment, food resupply at strategic points along the route, and even environmentally sensitive areas that need to be avoided”.
To facilitate the dissemination of the route and give access to people who have less time or even preparation, the intention of the project is to demarcate sections that allow hikers to cover, if not the entire route at once, smaller sections over time. “It will be like a sticker album, which will be completed little by little”, emphasizes Schwaida.
