If there is a motivation that has driven human beings to go around beating their legs since antiquity, religiosity is certainly one of the most present. Every hiker has at some point heard about or planned to walk the most famous of religious routes, the millenary Camino de Santiago, in Spain, with its more than 800 kilometers. Right here, in Brazil, we have already consolidated the Caminho da Fé, which, with 2,500 kilometers between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, triples the Spanish challenge of the apostle. And now the pilgrimage has a younger brother, inaugurated in August 2019 — the Caminho do Mosteiro, between the cities of Piracicaba and Torrinha, both in São Paulo.
Conceived by photographer Gustavo Alves de Oliveira, 44, who dreamed of a route suitable for cycle tourism, his favorite sport, in the vicinity of Piracicaba, where he lives, 158 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo, Caminho do Mosteiro has already attracted more than 1,000 motivated people not just by faith, but by the desire to know the region, a traditional producer of coffee, sugar cane, corn and livestock. It starts at a point of historical relevance, the Quilombo Corumbataí Historical Park, and continues to the centenary Mosteiro do Paraíso, a community of Benedictine agromonks in Torrinha.
For those who are just starting out as a pilgrim, and still don’t want to take the risk on long routes, this is an ideal option: with only 134 kilometers, the route can be done in between 5 and 7 days on foot, or in 2 to 4 days by bicycle. Riders usually cover the route in 4 to 5 days.
As it is an ideal route for beginners, Gustavo recommends some precautions for those who are starting out, such as not forgetting to close the gates of private properties crossed by the official route, keeping an eye out for dogs and other animals and, an ironclad clause, carrying your own garbage so as not to compromise the environment.
“In addition, the route is recorded in the Wikilog application, and can be downloaded to each pilgrim’s cell phone”, explains Gustavo. “And we have a WhatsApp number available 24 hours a day for any emergency, or in case the person gets lost, despite the signs with arrows indicating the route”, he adds. For even greater safety, he recommends that people be accompanied by their own support car, “because you never know what could happen, an accident, a twist, etc”. But this item is not mandatory, he stresses. That is: each one who identifies their limits and decides.
To give that taste of true pilgrimage (which is still a good memory, even if faith is not the reason for the walk), a certificate of completion of the journey is available, which can be purchased for R$ 35 in Piracicaba, at waypoint zero, and stamped in more than 20 food and overnight places. Camping, along the route, can be negotiated directly with the owners of the properties crossed, but Gustavo recalls that the average cost of each pilgrim with accommodation and food does not exceed R$ 150 to R$ 200 daily, which can recommend a good night’s sleep in a soft bed and a bathroom to relieve the tired body after a long journey.
“People usually do, on average, 20 kilometers a day, a maximum of 30, because some stretches are heavier, with a lot of sand or with steeper climbs”, he says.
