Brazilian Super Cup: Corinthians is three-time women’s champion – 02/18/2024 – Sport

In front of more than 33 thousand fans, Corinthians beat Cruzeiro 1-0, in Itaquera, and won the Brazilian Super Cup this Sunday morning (18). In three editions of the tournament, Corinthians won the cup in all of them — before, in 2022 and 2023.

With the title, the black and white club will receive R$600,000 in prize money paid by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation). The Belo Horizonte team will earn R$400,000 for runner-up.

This was coach Leandro Piccinato’s first title at Corinthians, after the long-lasting and successful era of Arthur Elias, who left Parque São Jorge in October last year to lead the Brazilian team. In eight years at the club, Elias lifted 16 cups.

Last year, the team had already won the Campeonato Paulista under the command of interim coach Rodrigo Iglesias.

The victory also consolidates the fifth consecutive title for the black and white team. In 2023, Corinthians won the Super Cup, the Paulista, the Brasileiro and the Libertadores.

It is also the first cup under the presidency of Augusto Melo, which could be a relief for the club’s management. The current administration, which began in January this year, started disastrously on and off the field.

Pushed by the excited black and white fans, Corinthians had more possession of the ball in the initial stage. On the other hand, Cruzeiro managed to stand out with good defensive performance.

After a truncated first half, Brabas only managed to open the scoring three minutes into the second half, with Duda Sampaio taking a free kick. Seven minutes later, Gabi Portilho hit the crossbar.

The Cabulosas, as the Cruzeiro fans are known, exerted pressure in the final minutes. Byanca Brasil scored a beautiful goal in the 41st minute, but it was canceled with the help of VAR. During the play, the ball touched the hand of Cruzeiro’s number 10 shirt.

VAR had already helped referee Deborah Cecilia Cruz Correia cancel a Cruzeiro goal at the beginning of the game. Yasmin scored a goal when trying to clear the ball in the area, but there was an offside position.

Scorer of the title goal, Duda Sampaio left the match emotional and very grateful to the fans in Itaquera. The decision had a paying audience of 33,175 (33,425, including press professionals) and an income of R$750,268.20 this Sunday.

In addition to winning the Brazilian Super Cup for the third time, the black and white team is the five-time champion of the Brazilian Championship (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) and four-time champion of the Libertadores (2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023) and the state championship (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023).

Football was reactivated at Parque São Jorge in 2016 and, since then, it has brought joy to faithful fans.

Cruzeiro takes the first steps in its process to consolidate the sport. Runner-up in the Brazilian Series A2 in 2019, the celestial team reached its first major decision in a national tournament this Sunday.

Despite the defeat, the Belo Horizonte squad left the pitch with their heads held high for the campaign. “I really wanted to score the goal, I really wanted the title, but more than the title is worth what Cruzeiro is building [no feminino]. Let it serve as an example of what SAF is building and the opportunity that Ronaldo is giving us”, said Byanca Brasil to TV Globo.

Shirt number 10 also praised the public’s presence in Itaquera this Sunday. “It’s the opponent’s, but I dream of one day having the [torcida] of Cruzeiro, have that of all teams in favor of women’s football”, said Byanca Brasil.

The classification for the title decision comes after a process of reformulating the sport initiated by Ronaldo Fenômeno at the Belo Horizonte club.
