FIFA (International Football Federation) announced this Monday (24th) that there are four pre-candidacies presented for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Brazil, as expected, is among those wishing to host the competition.
In an attempt to win the process, the country will face South Africa and two collective candidacies. Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have bid to host the tournament jointly. It is the same model adopted by the United States and Mexico.
“We are thrilled with the expressions of interest received. They come from associations with a strong tradition in football and represent four confederations, which confirms the popularity of women’s football around the world,” said FIFA’s general secretary, Fatma Samoura.
According to the Senegalese, it will be “the most robust and comprehensive bidding process in the history of the Women’s World Cup”. The document exchange part will now begin, with the official registration of the candidacies themselves scheduled for December.
There will then be inspection visits and the publication of a report regarding the conditions presented by the candidates. The host of the tournament will be defined at the FIFA General Congress, scheduled for May 17, 2024.
The idea of hosting the competition excites the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). According to the national secretary for Football and the Defense of Fans’ Rights, José Luís Ferrarezi, Brazil will “do everything” to win the competition.
“Women’s football will be a priority in this government,” said Ferrarezi, who expressed support for the candidacy in conversation with the president of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), Ednaldo Rodrigues. “We have the arenas, we have the necessary structure.”
Before receiving the championship, Brazil fights to win it for the first time. This year’s World Cup will start in July and will be played in Australia and New Zealand. The selection is in Group F, alongside France, Jamaica and Panama.
