In an interview with the Italian television channel RAI, Pope Francis surprised by mentioning Pelé as his favorite player when asked about the choice between Argentines Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

During his visit to the Vatican, Maradona declared that he was Francisco’s number 1 fan and said that the pope treated him like a human being.
The pope called Messi very correct and a gentleman. “All three are great. Each with their own specificity. Messi is strong at this moment. And Pelé was strong”, he added.
In the long interview, Francisco spoke about the Israel-Hamas and Ukraine wars and topics such as immigration and the climate crisis.
