Athletes from Oiapoque participate in international competition in British Guiana with support from the Government of Amapá – News of Brazil

The State Government guarantees air tickets for athletes from Amapá to participate in a Mixed Martial Arts event (MMA) in the city of Georgetown, capital of British Guiana. The incentive is among the commitments established in the current administration’s Government Plan to support local athletes in competitions in other states and countries.
The trip takes place on Saturday, 16th, and the dispute between Amapás will be on March 23rd. The group is part of a social and sports project that reaches children, young people and adults in the municipality of Oiapoque. The team’s coach and responsible for the project is the athlete Demétrio da Conceição, one of the first MMA fighters in the state.
“Firstly, I want to thank everyone who helped us get to the competition. This is an incentive to fight with all your might in search of victory.”Conceição pointed out.
The initiative to ensure the movement of the three athletes and the coach is coordinated by the Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel).
“With a combination of efforts, we are guaranteeing these athletes in an international competition and this is a commitment from the State to support and encourage the practice of sports in any modality and in any municipality. These competitors are from a social project in Oiapoque and this is a recognition of all the work done with the community and, now, they will represent Amapá and Brazil; beyond borders”highlighted the head of the Civil Cabinet, Richard Madureira.
One of the Brazilian fighters is Gabriel “Demetrinho”, wrestling champion in 2023, in São Paulo. The tournament, called Light Central and Ruff N Tuff, will bring together 16 competitions, with athletes from Brazil, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Canada and British Guiana and France. There will be 12 amateur fights and four for the professional title, including the debut of three Canadian athletes.
