The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) announced and presented this Friday (1st) the new technical commission of the Brazilian women’s national team. The coach is now Arthur Elias, renowned for the good work done at Corinthians in recent seasons.

The 42-year-old professional arrives to replace the Swede Pia Sundhage, 63, fired after the failure in the World Cup. She still had one year left on her contract, broken due to poor performance in Australia, with elimination still in the group stage.

Presented at the headquarters of the confederation, in Rio de Janeiro, the São Paulo player has already released his first call-up. There will be no friendlies this month, but he is going to take advantage of the dates set aside by Fifa (International Football Federation) to train with the group at Granja Comary.

Its first list had the star Marta, 37, and the also veteran Cristiane, 38, passed over by the coach of the selection in the last Cup.

“I see that they still have a lot to contribute to the national team. Marta may not have arrived at the World Cup in her best condition, I hope she is better now. Cris’ return is well deserved, for what she did last year in terms of of performance”, said Elias.

In all, 30 athletes were selected, nine of them from Corinthians.

“I am sure that we will be able to change the reality of women’s football in Brazil in a short time. My mission is to bring results in the short term, in the Olympic Games. The Brazilian team needs to be a world protagonist again, that is our objective”, said the coach.

Also announced by the CBF were former players Rosana Augusto, the new coach of the under-20 team, and Simone Jatobá, who takes over the under-17 team.

Elias will initially split between Corinthians and the national team. That was one of the conditions established by the club to release the coach, as it is at a decisive moment of the year.

The alvinegra association is in the semifinals of the Brazilian Championship, very close to the decision. After a 3-0 victory over Santos, in Vila Belmiro, in the first leg, they just need to protect their good advantage in the duel scheduled for this Saturday (2), at Parque São Jorge.

The professional will also command the team until the end of its participation in the Copa Libertadores. The tournament will be played from the 5th to the 21st of October.

“I’ve been a professional coach for 20 years, and 90% of that time has been dedicated to women’s football here in Brazil. In all that time, between successes and mistakes, defeats and victories, my concern has always been my personal and professional development,” said Elias .

The coach’s contract with the CBF will last for four years. The cycle that begins now has as its main competitions the Olympic Games in Paris, in 2024, and the 2027 World Cup, with an indefinite host – Brazil is one of the candidates.

Arthur’s great record at the head of Corinthians weighed in, which reactivated its women’s team in 2016. Since then, the club has won 14 titles, including three editions of the Copa Libertadores (2017, 2019 and 2021) and four of the Brazilian Championship (2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022).

In a statement, the Parque São Jorge club thanked the professional. “Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, especially in the presidency and the entire women’s football department, congratulates and celebrates the achievement of this goal by Arthur Elias, a reference professional who dedicated his career to the sport and deservedly receives this opportunity .”
