The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced this Friday (1) the hiring of Arthur Elias to direct the main women’s national team. The 42-year-old coach takes over as a replacement for Sweden’s Pia Sundhage, who stepped down after Australia and New Zealand’s first-phase elimination from the World Cup.

Arthur’s announcement took place at a last-minute press conference, held at the CBF headquarters, in Barra da Tijuca, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. On that occasion, the new coach already made his first call-up in office, for a training period at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis (RJ), between September 18th and 26th. The list, with 30 names, has the return of striker Cristiane. The 38-year-old veteran, one of the biggest names in Brazilian women’s football of all time, has not been called up since 2021.

Corinthians, Arthur’s team, was the club with the most calls: nine. The coach will even reconcile his work in the national team and in Timão until the end of the Libertadores Feminina, which will be played between October 5th and 21st, in Colombia. Until then, he will still have the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship ahead of him. The alvinegras, who are looking for their fifth national title (fourth in a row), are in the semifinals and opened up an advantage over Santos, by winning the first game of the confrontation by 3-0, in Vila Belmiro, the opponent’s home, last Sunday (27) . The return match will take place this Saturday (2), at 4:30 pm (Brasília time), at Parque São Jorge, in São Paulo.

According to a note from the CBF, released earlier this Friday afternoon, about three hours before the press conference, two more names were considered for the position: Emily Lima (currently in the Peruvian women’s national team) and Rosana Augusto. The latter, former winger and twice Olympic silver medalist and world runner-up wearing the hopscotch, was announced as coach of the under-20 team, replacing Jonas Urias, fired amid the department’s overhaul. Red Bull Bragantino, the club for which Rosana was champion of Série A2 (second division) of the Brasileirão this year, announced the permanent departure of the coach, who will be Arthur’s assistant during the period at Granja Comary.

Arthur has been working with women’s football since 2006. There are 14 titles in his curriculum, 13 of which at Corinthians. He won five Brasileiros (one for the Olympic Centre), three Libertadores, three Campeonato Paulistas, two Supercopa do Brasil and a Copa do Brasil.
