Arsenal passes Manchester City in terms of labor costs – 07/18/2023 – O Mundo É uma Bola

In the ongoing transfer window, Arsenal have been outstanding in purchases. With the market open for just over a month, the London team reinforced itself with three players considered top of the line.

English midfielder Declan Rice, formerly of West Ham, joined the ranks of the Gunners for € 116.6 million (R$ 628.5 million), in the most expensive transaction so far of this period, the German attacking midfielder Kai Havertz, former -Chelsea, for €75 million (R$404.2 million), and Dutch defender Jurriën Timber, formerly of Ajax, for €40 million (R$215.6 million).

All of them were with their respective national teams at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – Rice and Timber were starters.

Arsenal, controlled by the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment group, from the USA, opened its coffers with the intention of doing well not only in the Premier League (the elite division in England) but also in the Champions League (the main interclubs in Europe), a tournament that played for the last time in 2016/2017.

With the investment in the trio, the current English vice-champion took over the top of the clubs with the most expensive squad in football: € 1.21 billion (R$ 6.52 billion). The account is made by the German site Transfermarkt, which specializes in assessing the market value of footballers.

The former leader, Manchester City, which is the current European champion and had not lost first place for more than two years, has its workforce valued today at € 1.19 billion (R$ 6.42 billion).

The Citizens’ most expensive players are Norwegian center forward Haaland, 22 (€180 million), and England attacking midfielder Phil Foden, 23 (€110 million).

Rounding out the top 5 on Transfermarkt’s list of teams with the most valuable squad are Paris Saint-Germain (€1.02 billion), Real Madrid (€991 million) and Bayern Munich (€954.5 million). The best placed Brazilian (€165.4 million) is Flamengo, 63rd overall.

Age is one of the most influential factors in defining the market value of each player, and Arsenal’s recent signings are still quite young.

Rice and Havertz are 24 years old, and Timber is 22. According to Transfermarkt, the team’s most valuable player is offensive wing Bukayo Saka, 21, valued at €120m.

By analyzing the platform’s data, Arsenal, however, paid dearly for both Rice and Havertz, as they have a current value estimated at €90 million and €55 million, respectively.

When analyzing Arsenal’s arrival at the top, the website states that there is a reasonable chance that this position will be temporary and Manchester City – managed by the Abu Dhabi United Group, from the United Arab Emirates – will resume the post.

“It’s hard to say which club will have the most valuable squad at the end of the transfer window, but it’s not unlikely that Man City will overtake the north London club again. If they bring in Josko Gvardiol from Leipzig, for example, and Arsenal sell Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Folarin Balogun, the Citizens would be around €150m ahead of the Gunners.”

The transfer window remains open in the main European leagues until September 1, and so far the club coached by Pep Guardiola has spent “only” €29.1 million to reinforce itself with Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic, 29, who left the Chelsea.

In order to make a comparison of the value of top players who play in Europe (such as those mentioned in this text) with the highlights of the Brazilian Championship, it is enough to state that, according to Transfermarkt, the most valuable here –all strikers– are Flamengo fans Pedro, 26 (€22 million), and Gabigol, 26 (€21 million), and Palmeiras Endrick, 16 (€20 million), who was traded to Real Madrid at the end of 2022 but will stay with the São Paulo team until the middle of 2024.

The three are the only ones participating in the main competition in Brazil with a quote equal to or greater than €20 million (R$107.8 million).
