At 99 years old, Dutch swimmer Betty Brussel managed to break three records in a single competition. Last Sunday (28), she completed the 100-meter freestyle in 12 minutes and 50 seconds, reducing the best time of the race by four minutes — and also setting new marks for the 50-meter breaststroke and backstroke competitions.
Betty, who was born in 1924, competed in the 100-104 age group. “When I’m swimming, I don’t think about anything. I just count the strokes and try to find a ‘pace’ that I can sustain. In the last stroke, I give everything I have,” she told “The Guardian”.
The competition took place at a club in the city of Saanich, Canada. Born in the Netherlands, Betty says she learned to swim with her brothers in the canals of Amsterdam. In 1959, she immigrated with her family to the North American country, where she raised her three children.
It was only at the age of 60 that Betty decided to take the sport seriously and began participating in championships. However, she says she is “lazy”, as she only trains twice a week. Betty’s medal box is so big that it has become too heavy for her to carry.
“I don’t think about records, I just swim,” she said, but she breaks new marks all the time, as it is rare to find people her age competing in swimming.
“I don’t feel old, only sometimes. My youngest son, who is 70 years old, says ‘Mommy, you’re old’, but I don’t feel old. Only when I’m very tired”, she says. “The pool makes me forget all my problems and sadness. When I’m in the pool I feel confident,” she reported.
