Stage of glories and historic moments of Amapá sport, the Zerão Olympic Stadium turned 33 years old in October 2023. And, to celebrate the protagonists of some of these stories, the State Government paid tribute on Tuesday (31) to historic football players amapaense, with the delivery of shirts commemorating the event and certificates for former athletes.

The players recognized in the action, coordinated by the State Department of Sports and Leisure, shone between the 1970s and 1990s, becoming champions of the now extinct Amazon Cup. The tournament involved clubs from the former federal territories located in the north of Brazil: Amapá, Rondônia and Roraima, in addition to the state of Acre. The then territory of Amapá won the championship on seven occasions.

“It is important to honor these athletes in life so that they can have the opportunity to feel this emotion. This is a historic moment on a very important date for our sport”, said the acting Secretary of Sports and Leisure, Ricardo Nascimento.

One of these athletes is “Trator” Miranda, who scored Zerão’s first goal, precisely in the last edition of the Copa Amazônia, held in 1990. The historic goal was scored in a match between Independente, the attacker’s then team, and Trem.

“When I come here I feel at home. It is a place where I have had many joys and made many friends during my career. I also feel very happy to be remembered for my journey”, said the gunner.

Zerão Stadium

Inaugurated on October 17, 1990 by Governor Gilton Garcia, with the presence of the president of the time, Fernando Collor de Mello, Zerão was built with the aim of boosting Amapá sport, as explained by Amapá football historian, Franselmo George.

“Until then we only had the Glicério Marques stadium in Macapá. It was necessary to build another sports square, which is why the Zerão Stadium was built, bringing development to Amapá sports,” explained the historian.

A curiosity about Zerão is the fact that the intermediate line of its field is drawn by the Equator, dividing it between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This fact has already yielded many interesting stories, such as when Botafogo’s former top scorer, Túlio Maravilha, scored a goal at the stadium, for Fast from Amazonas, and said he scored a “goal like even Pelé did” for scoring it in the middle of the world.

In its sports complex, the stadium has a structure that allows the practice of different types of athletics, which is why it bears the name Olympic. Zerão also has a memorial to Amapá football, with frames of historical photos of the sport, as well as other items such as shirts and trophies from important football moments. Another action carried out in the space is a football school that serves young people between 6 and 17 years old.

Despite being popularly known as “Zerão”, the place also bears the name of the journalist and football supporter in the state, Milton de Souza Corrêa. Important sports character, who in addition to being the founder of Guarany Atlético Clube, was also a member of Macapá Sport Clube.
