Governor highlights that project is essential in the environmental education of children to contain the advance of climate change

The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, held meetings in Brasília (DF), this Monday (27), to seek partnerships to face the impacts of climate change. He presented the Escola da Floresta project to the German ambassador Heiko Thoms and to the representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Morgan Doyle.

The project consists of building teaching units in Conservation Units (UCs) to expand the offer of environmental education to students in the state public network.

“Events such as those that took place on Saturday (in Manaus), with above average rainfall, have become more and more constant. We have no doubt that this is the result of climate change. And they can only stabilize if we, the citizen, begin to be aware of and respect what we have in terms of natural resources. And we can only do this consistently when we start educating our children”, said Wilson Lima.

Representatives of the IDB and the German government highlighted the importance of the project and will evaluate the possibility of establishing partnerships.

The Escola da Floresta project, by the State Secretariat for Education and Sports, in partnership with the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema), provides for the construction of three units in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Caverna do Maroaga, in Presidente Figueiredo ; in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) of Uatumã, in São Sebastião do Uatumã; and on RDS Piagaçu Purus, in the municipality of Beruri.

sustainable concept

The governor has already signed the service order for the implementation of the Escola da Floresta in the RDS Uatumã.

The schools, designed to have a low environmental impact, will be built in a sustainable model, using wood from sustainable forest management and also wood from seizures carried out by the Institute for Environmental Protection of Amazonas (Ipaam) in illegal extraction activities. .

The sustainable physical space is one of the pillars of Escola da Floresta, which will also have democratic management, with respect for sociocultural diversity and human rights, and will promote environmental education with a focus on the preservation of natural resources. The goal is to strengthen sustainable socio-environmental development.

“We are building our Escola da Floresta with this whole concept of sustainability. It is a structure that is unprecedented in the state of Amazonas and we are going to start with sustainable development reserves. So, I also came here to present this proposal to the IDB”, said Wilson Lima after presenting the project to the bank.

“We have already started building the first one (Escola da Floresta) and we have, at this first moment, three schools scheduled to be built. But we want to put in all the sustainable development reserves that we have in the state of Amazonas and then replicate this model for urban areas”, stressed the governor.
