Parliamentarian committed to taking political action so that strategies to combat drought in the state are implemented quickly

Manaus (AM) – Federal deputy Saullo Vianna (União-AM) participated, this Tuesday (16), in the presentation of a detailed action plan whose objective is to subsidize the National Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DNIT), in the work to mitigate the severe effects of drought, expected for 2024.

“We have to anticipate measures to combat drought, since in the past, severe droughts impacted 59 municipalities and around 630 thousand people. In addition to the financial losses to municipalities, residents of more distant communities faced problems in the supply of water, food, health supplies and fuel”,

said Vianna.

Projections presented by technicians from DNIT, Brazilian Navy, ANTAQ – National Waterway Transport Agency and the Amazonas Pilotage Association, reveal that, in Tabocal alone, in the Madeira region, it will be necessary to remove around 40 thousand cubic meters of sediment from the riverbed, the equivalent of 8 thousand buckets.

In addition to dredging riverbeds to prevent vessels from running aground or becoming blocked without being able to take goods and inputs to municipalities, other measures are also being studied to facilitate the flow of production.

According to the Director of Aquatic Infrastructure at DNIT, Erick Moura, the focus of the discussion was the implementation of preventive dredging measures in the Amazon rivers. “We already have the bidding process practically ready, with the publication of the notice scheduled for the next few days, so that work can begin in August or September”, says Moura.

The idea is that DNIT already has a company contracted for a period of five years for fixed dredging in Amazonas. Today, according to technicians, the critical points are averaging 18 and 19 meters, around 2 meters lower than last year, when the historic drought occurred.

Loss of 1 billion

The 2023 drought caused a drop in ICMS collection revenue of more than 1 billion, not counting the loss of 1.5 billion estimated in the Manaus Free Zone, according to the Amazonas Industries Center.

More than 70 thousand containers failed to arrive with inputs and, if there is no effort to bring forward measures to mitigate the drought in the Amazon rivers, the estimate is that this year 90 thousand containers will no longer dock at ports in the Amazon.
