María Corina Machado would run against President Nicolás Maduro in 2024

The opposition pre-candidate favorite for the 2024 presidential elections in Venezuela, María Corina Machado, from the most radical wing of the opposition, was considered ineligible for 15 years for public office, according to the official letter from the Comptroller General of the Union released this Friday (30). ).

The decision was announced after the policy of the “Vente Venezuela” party formalized its candidacy for the opposition primaries, scheduled for next October 22, during which the opposition candidate who will compete against Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 presidential elections will be elected.

The 55-year-old politician is an industrial engineer and a former parliamentarian.

“Administrative irregularities”

According to the Comptroller, the impeachment is based on “administrative irregularities” when she was a deputy (2011-2014). In principle, the disqualification imposed in 2015 was valid for one year, but the Comptroller continued to investigate it in the following years and extended the punishment.

Machado is also accused of having participated in “a corruption scheme” headed by former opposition leader Juan Guaidó, recognized between January 2019 and January 2023 as president in charge of Venezuela by 50 governments that ignored Maduro’s reelection in 2018 for considering it “fraudulent”. The measure prevents Machado from registering with the electoral authorities and, therefore, from running in the presidential election.

“We already knew this, no one was surprised, this was coming, but if they believed or thought that this farce of disqualification was going to discourage participation in the primaries, they should be prepared, because if we were strong before, now we are going even stronger” , said Machado during a political act. “Now we are going with more enthusiasm”, stressed the politician, referring to the primaries organized by the opposition for October 22nd.
