Unifap extension project offers crossfit for young people in Santana (AP) – News of Brazil

Last Saturday, the 27th, the inaugural class of the “Cross Fitness” extension project was held in Santana, promoted by the Training, Training, Improvement, Professional Qualification and Languages ​​Program (Profid), of the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap) , which offers access to sport and leisure for 80 young people. The Santanense community will benefit from a sport that is currently widespread in gyms and squares, Crossfit.

Lasting ten months, the initiative aims to provide physical and mental benefits through a combination of high-intensity exercises and different modalities, known to increase resistance, strength, flexibility and motor coordination.

For the project coordinator, Professor Melque Lima, “Cross Fitness” appears as a response to social demands and the need to provide equal opportunities for the low-income community.

“It is a project that is providing opportunities for young people and adults, aged 16 and over, to participate and democratize the practice of CrossFit, completely free of charge. And, for this, we count on the support of the academic community, teachers, civil servants and academics. The project focuses on the inclusion and participation of all those interested in the practice, promoting a healthy environment. The initiative has been widely supported by the University, which recognizes the importance of physical activity in promoting the health and well-being of the community”he stated.

During the inaugural class on the 27th, there was a brief presentation of the program, highlighting the importance of sport as a way of overcoming and personal transformation. Students then had the opportunity to try out some exercises under the guidance of qualified instructors. In addition to the presence of project participants, the event was attended by local authorities, including senator Randolfe Rodrigues, who highlighted the importance of extension projects promoted by the University.

“The project fits into the university’s tripod, which encompasses teaching, research and extension. Extension is the indispensable part of this tripod, as it connects the university with the community, promoting mutual benefits. Profid has already trained thousands of people from Amapá in the Libra language, in addition to promoting and creating talents in Amapá singing. Now, it brings a new opportunity for the residents of Santana”, emphasized Randolfe Rodrigues.

During the inaugural class, the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants was evident. Many of them had never had access to a structured sporting activity before and the opportunity to try CrossFit awakened their curiosity and desire to overcome things, as is the case of Januza Rocha, an academic from another university, who decided to participate in the project due to her interest in activity and the impossibility of paying monthly fees for conventional gyms.

“I was interested in the project, as otherwise I wouldn’t have access due to the high cost of monthly fees at traditional gyms. It was very good, the place is close to a peripheral community, so we have easy access and we are very well received here in this neighborhood. My expectation is an improvement in life, not just physically, but also in terms of mental health.”explained the student.

The program reinforces the Federal University of Amapá’s commitment to promoting extension actions that positively impact society and help build a more equal and fair future.
