The University Council of Uerj (State University of Rio de Janeiro) approved, this Friday (2), the creation of a Truth Commission to look into the cases of students at the institution who were persecuted, arrested, tortured and killed during the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

The establishment of the collegiate was decided while a discussion was taking place on the revocation of the title of doctor honoris causa granted to General Emílio Garrastazu Médici, dictator who presided over the country between 1969 and 1974. The annulment of the title will now become an agenda of the new commission.

The soldier was decorated in 1974 by the then University of Guanabara. In 2015, a homonymous honor offered to Médici by UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) was revoked following guidance from the institution’s Memory and Truth Commission.

In addition to the creation of the collegiate that will revisit the cases of the dictatorship, the Uerj approved this Friday the granting of the title of honorary doctor, its highest honor, to the singer and composer Gilberto Gil and to the LGBTQIA+ activist Keila Simpson.

The tribute to the Bahian musician and former Minister of Culture was proposed by the university’s Center for Education and Humanities, which highlighted Gil’s “invaluable contribution” to the construction of a national culture policy.

The founder of the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) will be honored for her work in defense of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and for her leading role in favor of the adoption of the social name in documents. The proposal to pay homage to Simpson came from the Dean of Student Policies and Assistance at Uerj.
