Last week, the president of CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), Ricardo Galvão, told Sheet that the Federal government intends to invest R$1 billion to repatriate Brazilian scientists living abroad.
The idea is to reduce the “brain drain” by providing financial incentives for researchers to return and settle in Brazil. The measure, however, generated criticism on social media from, above all, those who carry out research in the country.
Internet users argue that the most effective measure to prevent scientists from settling abroad is to improve working conditions here, in addition to the lack of a career structure, which would be, according to some, much more attractive and effective for the “return of brains.”
“It’s the height of a lack of planning and coordination”, says Professor João Prates Romero.
Shot in the foot.
Critics argue that the solution is temporary, devalues the national researcher and that the measure exposes the lack of a job market for the category. “They prefer anyone who has a paper issued outside the country to invest in people who are here”, says one user.
Others point to the lack of investment in basic education and infrastructure at federal universities.
