The total amount of public money disbursed or estimated to cover the damage from the coup attacks on January 8 already exceeds R$ 20 million, inform the STF (Federal Supreme Court), the Planalto Palace and the National Congress.

The most up-to-date data were obtained from Sheet through the Access to Information Law and also with the CPI of January 8.

According to information provided by the summit of the three Powers, the STF had the greatest loss, with a value of R$ 11.4 million so far between money already disbursed and estimated.

Then come Congress, with BRL 4.9 million —BRL 2.7 million in the Chamber and BRL 2.2 million in the Senate—, and the Planalto, with BRL 4.3 million.

The total amount of losses caused by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is still expected to grow, as there are costs that, six months after the event, have not yet been estimated.

This is the case, for example, of the 18th century French clock given by the French court as a gift to Dom João 6th and which was thrown twice to the ground on the day of the attacks.

There are only two units of the clock produced by the artist Balthazar Martinot – the second is in the Palace of Versailles, France. The armoire used as a base for the clock, a porcelain amphora and a rosewood chair are among the other damaged works whose assessment has yet to be made.

Identified as Antonio Claudio Alves Ferreira, 30, the vandal of Dom João 6º’s watch was arrested by the Federal Police on January 23 in the city of Uberlândia (MG). On January 8, he wore a T-shirt with Bolsonaro’s face on it.

A Sheet made requests at the beginning of last month, through the Access Law, to the STF, Chamber, Senate and Planalto – only the last two have responded so far. Despite this, the Chamber sent an updated report of the losses to the CPI. The press office of the Supreme informed the report of the current amount of expenditure made and estimated with the attacks.

The highest cost informed by the Executive refers to damaged works of art. The General Coordination of Asset Management of the Presidency identified malfunctions in 24 of them. Of these, 15 had the values evaluated by the agency, in an amount that reaches R$ 3.5 million.

Regarding the structure of the palace, the biggest expense was with replacing the glasswork broken by vandals (R$ 204,000). There is also a list of 149 items that disappeared, including eight spark elite 22.0 stun guns, health equipment (stethoscope, nebulizer and glucometer), handcuffs, armchairs, drawers and other objects.

As in Planalto, in Congress the highest values informed concern the restoration of works of art and history damaged by vandals.

The Sculpture Wall by Athos Bulcão, which is located in the Salão Verde da Câmara, was perforated, for example.

Among the thefts that occurred on the 8th, there is a gift from Qatar to the Chamber, “The Pearl”, made in gold, pearl and leather and valued at R$ 5,000.

The Chamber will also need to change all 2,000 square meters of carpet in the Salão Verde —the main one in the House—, at a cost of R$626,000.

In the Senate, the highest expense concerns the restoration of the 19th-century oil painting representing the “Act of Signature of the First Constitution”—it measures 2.90 x 4.41 meters, is framed in solid rosewood, gold-leafed .

On the day of the attacks, vandals hung on the work, which is in the Senate museum, in an attempt to overthrow it.

“Fortunately, they didn’t, but the screen came loose from the base of the frame, which caused dents [marca de uma avaria] and scratches on the painting”, wrote the coordinator of the Historical Museum of the Federal Senate, Maria Cristina Monteiro, in her report.

The wooden frame also suffered support losses, and the complete restoration of the work is estimated at BRL 800,000.

The Burle Marx tapestry, which was urinated on, torn and even scratched with marbles, has a projected recovery cost of R$ 250,000.

“In contact with Burle Marx Oficina de Paisagismo, the atelier of restorer Raul Carvalho, in São Paulo, was indicated as a reference. fifty thousand reais) covers the restoration, transport and insurance of the work of art”, says the report signed by Maria Cristina.

The coordinator also points out in the report that several items vandalized in the invasion of the three Powers have already been restored. Among them, a desk, dating from the 19th century, belonging to the Monroe Palace, the seat of the Senate in the former federal capital, Rio de Janeiro.

“The piece of furniture, which was part of the furniture for the reception of the Ceremonial of the Presidency of the Senate, was completely vandalized. Its drawers were pulled out, the top was left in the Blue Room, many pieces and fragments were found in the Black Room, Blue Room and Tunnel of Time. The piece of furniture was reassembled like a jigsaw puzzle, requiring scraps of wood and grafts to replace the missing fragments. The piece was finished and is currently on display at the Museu do Senado.”

The January 8 attacks, promoted by Bolsonaro supporters, took place days after the inauguration of President Lula (PT) and represented an unprecedented action in the history of the Republic.

The Attorney General’s Office has already denounced 1,390 people for the riot in the Praça dos Três Poderes. Of these, the STF has already accepted the complaint against 1,290, which made them defendants.

The case also motivated the installation of a mixed CPI in the National Congress.

On another front that is being processed in the Federal Court, the AGU (Attorney General of the Union) filed lawsuits to seek compensation for damages caused to public coffers.

In three requests, according to the agency, the unavailability of assets of more than a hundred people and companies was requested, including those accused of financing the charter of buses that transported Bolsonaro supporters to Brasília in the days leading up to the acts.
