*) The case of jewelry belonging to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) continues to have repercussions. This Tuesday, for example, ex-minister Bento Albuquerque, who brought the present from Saudi Arabia to Brazil, deposed.

Much remains to be clarified. Former President Bolsonaro is even promising to return the gift that actually stayed with him, that box with a pen, cufflinks, etc….

The fact is that gifts for presidents of the Republic are a subject that does not only concern Bolsonaro. There is a brief history, including former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) and also gifts for current president Lula (PT), in the first two terms.

Between 2016 and 2019, when inspecting the gifts received by the Presidency from 2003 to 2016, the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) found that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appropriated 434 objects given to Brazil by heads of state foreigners during his first two terms. Former president Dilma Rousseff, in turn, took 117 items for herself.
