Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic could participate in this year’s US Open. He was left out of the competition last year for not having been vaccinated against Covid-19, which was required for entry into the United States.

However, as the requirement will be withdrawn, his participation is allowed. In a decision announced on Monday (01), the US government’s requirement will be closed next week, on May 11, thus allowing Djokovic’s entry. The Grand Slam will start on August 28.

The Serb, known for denialist ideas throughout the pandemic, has not taken the doses of vaccines against Covid-19. Therefore, he was barred from entering the US because of this decision.

“Novak Djokovic is a great champion, a crowd favorite, and now that the federal government has eliminated proof of vaccination requirements for foreign nationals, we look forward to welcoming him to New York for this year’s US Open.” tournament spokesman Chris Widmaier told The Associated Press news agency.

For not vaccinating himself, Djokovic had been facing difficulties to compete in major competitions in the USA. Throughout the pandemic, he was only able to enter the court on American soil at the US Open, in 2021 and 2020.

But he has not competed in the Masters 1000 since the tournament at this level played in Cincinnati in 2020. He has lost Indian Wells and Miami in recent years.

The biggest controversy led by Djokovic in the period was the deportation suffered in Australia, in January 2022. At the time, he tried to enter the country without proof of vaccination and ended up creating a judicial and diplomatic imbroglio, which culminated in his deportation.
