Olympic champion Tande, as former volleyball player Alexandre Ramos Samuel, 54, is known, suffered a heart attack last Friday (12).

He published a video on his social networks from the hospital bed where he is recovering, in Rio de Janeiro, and spoke about the medical problem he faced. Looking haggard, he said he had a 98% blockage in a heart vein.

“I started to neglect my health a little, after about four years of not taking care of myself,” said Tande, citing dietary problems.

“Pay attention to the signs,” added the former player, who mentioned shortness of breath, ear pain and palpitations among the symptoms he felt. “Always take care of yourselves.”

Tande was one of the main names on the Brazilian volleyball team that won gold at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. During his career he defended clubs such as Flamengo, Botafogo, Banespa and Mediolanum (Italy). He also won the World League in 1993, before switching to beach volleyball.

After retiring, he worked as a commentator and presenter on sports programs on TV Globo.
